In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth*8
"Wait, what?"
"Seth, that's not the name of the Coheed & Cambria album!"
You would be correct, eagle-eyed viewer. This has nothing to do with Coheed & Cambria. This has to do, instead, with Minecraft.
For those not in the know, Markus Persson (aka Notch) wrote the code for Minecraft in such a manner that any Minecraft world is eight times the size of Earth. This area has since been known on a somewhat official level as Earth*8.
I, being the crazy individual I am, want to reach the edge of Earth*8.
To do this, I've generated a single-player world and built, at the spawn point, a giant glowstone pillar. Now, using a combination of the TooManyItems (for stupidly easy compass acquiring) and Single Player Commands (for flying and speed modifications) mods for Minecraft, I will set out in search of the end of Earth*8.
Settings-wise, I have set myself to move at twenty times normal speed to cover as much ground (or air, as it goes) as possible. I may end up setting this even higher to maximize my chances of reaching the end of Earth*8, but I don't want to set it so high that it crashes Minecraft due to the sheer amount of rendering the system will have to do to keep up with me. I have also been flying above cloud level and setting my render distance to the shortest distance possible in hopes of making it easier on my system.
Using Cartographer G, i'll be posting world renders at the end of each session. Here are the first two.
As of 3/5/11: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1…68618/MC%20Progress/1.png (Note: This was at 10x speed instead of 20x.)
As of 3/7/11: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1…68618/MC%20Progress/2.png
